multi-sensory exhibition

This project characterizes the musical instrument Viola and shows the process of creating it. Starting with the tree and ending with its specific sound production, the installation offered new perspectives on the instrument through an interactive and sensorial approach. For three days it was open to the public on the 360°Festival.

Visitors were introduced by a raw tree trunk, then could listen to the drinking sound of trees, made audible by a research group at ZHK using ultrasonic waves. The different parts of the viola are made out of specific wood that has different density and therefore sound properties. This aspect was shown in an interactive installation, where the haptic of the wood as an interface could be experienced together with the visual representation of their cells. Lucier Peter Erben from Munich collaborated with us by working on a viola throughout the duration of the exhibition and gave personal insights about the process of creating an instrument.

The core piece of the installation was a audiovisual Installation, where the separated parts of the specific tone spectrum of the viola where played in a 6 channel walkable sound space. The corresponding projection showes the frequency spectrum in time like a fingerprint of the instrument.
